Our StoryOur business originated in the newsletter division of Phillips Publishing International (PPI) more than two decades ago.
In 1985, PPI began expanding its newsletter offerings to include natural health–related titles that featured advice from alternative medicine doctors. These included the 1991 launch of our flagship letter, Dr. Julian Whitaker’s Health & Healing, and the acquisition of Mountain Home Publishing and the newsletter Alternatives, both owned by Dr. David Williams.
The health advice was well-received, and readers began calling to find out where they could buy the nutritional products recommended by our physician editors. We helped point them to safe, appropriate sources, and then began working with the doctors to formulate their own supplements.
The rest, as they say, is history.
In 2004, the business was sold and officially rebranded as Healthy Directions. Today we are proud to be a leading health publisher and direct-to-consumer retailer of doctor-formulated nutritional supplements and skincare products, dedicated to helping people lead healthier, happier lives. Healthy Directions provides expert guidance and advanced nutritional supplements from America’s most knowledgeable and highly respected integrative and alternative health doctors including Julian Whitaker, MD, Dr. David Williams, Stephen Sinatra, MD, Susan Lark, MD, Aaron Tabor, MD, Richard Wurtman, MD, and Joseph Pergolizzi, Jr., MD.

Vision care
Supporting your eye health is important throughout your life, but becomes especially important as you get older. The good news is, there are several simple ways to naturally support your eye health—most of which involve basic lifestyle changes. Here are some of the top ones I recommend.
- Get moving. Researchers in the UK found that higher levels of physical activity have a long-term beneficial impact on low ocular perfusion pressure (OPP), a significant risk factor for glaucoma. More specifically, study participants who had exercised moderately 15 years previously had a 25 percent reduced risk of low OPP.
- Eat foods high in antioxidants. Free radical damage is one of the primary causes of vision loss and other eye conditions, so one of the best ways to naturally support your eye health is with antioxidants. Increase your intake of these important nutrients by eating more vegetables and fruits, especially dark, leafy greens. In one study, men who ate cooked spinach twice a week had half the risk of cataract surgery compared to those who ate it less than once a month. Plus, another study found that women who ate spinach five times a week had a 45 percent reduced risk of cataracts. Other foods linked to supporting eye health and reducing risk of vision loss include broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, melons and citrus fruits.
- Take off your sunglasses. There’s no doubt that excessive exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) can damage your eyes. However, wearing sunglasses all the time blocks wavelengths of light that not only nourish the eyes but are essential for optimal health. So let a little sun in your eyes—just make sure you get adequate amounts of antioxidants to counter any free radical damage, and never look directly at the sun.
- Include one whole egg in your daily diet. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two nutrients (called carotenoids) that are concentrated in the macula. One good source of these carotenoids is egg yolks. In fact, one study found that eating six eggs per week increased density of the macular pigment and raised blood levels of zeaxanthin, but had no effect on cholesterol.
- Quit smoking. Smoking triples risk of cataracts and quadruples risk of macular degeneration.
- Take supplements for vision health, along with a quality daily multivitamin, for extra support.
